“Green to Gold” (Solange, France)
Pencil, pastel, & watercolor
October 2023
“All things on earth point home in old October: sailors to sea, travelers to walls and fences, hunters to field and hollow and the long voice of the hounds, the lover to the love he has forsaken.”
—Thomas Wolfe; “Of Time and the River
It’s a lovely quotation, of course, but it remains that Wolfe (never known as a constant or even particularly accomplished lover) was wrong at the end of this passage. October is lovely, but i don’t know anyone (including myself) who says “Oh, it’s so lovely! I think I’ll call up my ex-spouse or a dead lover”.
It doesn’t work that way for normal, reasonably-adjusted folks, Thomas.
That said?……Autumn is lovely in France (I’ve never been tempted to go in July or August).
