“Winter Travelers”
Oil pencil & drybrush
2022
I should, perhaps, title this “Winter Orphans”. I (having forgotten that I’d ever done it) found it, today, in last year’s portfolio. It was commissioned by a rather manic, a bit overly enthusiastic woman in Winchester who later went AWOL (not really such a surprise to me). In any case, I still have it, and it’s for sale….for those who like wolves.
I should perhaps emphasize that, while I LIKE wolves and think that they’re beautiful, I’m not one to anthropomorphize them and go around babbling about spirit catchers and my “totem animal”. I do like reading about them and various conservation efforts, but I know full well that, in a hard winter, a pack of them would eat me and my little dogs up for lunch,
I do regularly think that it wouldn’t be bad to have a FEW wolves back in the North Carolina piedmont. They’d kill the coyotes which are rapidly infiltrating the county and which would, indeed, kill and eat my terriers (And my neighbor’s cats) in a flash.
