“Old Friends/Yin & Yang”” (portrait of Jim Adams & Zooey)
Pencil pastel, & watercolor
2026
Jim is a local artist/sculptor/man-of-many-pursuits whom I admire. He’s a nice-looking man, of course, but I’ll admit that my main motivation for painting this was Zooey, who seems The Compleat, Perfect Hound Dog. That beseeching, “PLEASE love me as much as I love you”, hopelessly besotted gaze….the flopping, lie-all-over-you posture.
I grew up with hounds, but have, for all of my adult life, kept terriers. In my experience, terriers always look at you as though they ordered a sandwich 45 minutes ago, and you still haven’t brought it.
Miss Zooey wins Dog of the Month here at my house. Jim will be having his own show at the Thomas Stevens Gallery in Hillsborough, NC this month. Go to: https://thomasstevens.com/Exhibits/Exhibits/ategenos.html
This piece’s title is, of course, that of a fine Sondheim song about longtime friends. Do go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXxo8sPOlCk…
