From my first book, “Books of Passage”. Ever since that thing (with it portraits of thirty or so NC writers) came out, I’ve been regularly besieged by women (who don’t necessarily seem to actually READ anything) asking WHO IS THIS MAN? I’ve told Clyde (whom I run into at the Durham Food Lion from time to time, when we’re both shopping for old ladies) that he’s apparently the candy-poster-boy of Southern Literature. He’s just fine with that. I would be, too, if it ever happened to me.
