“Modern Cat/Same Old, Ancient Impulses”
Pencils and watercolor. 2026. Commissioned.
Despite my remarkably conflicted relationship with all cats, I’ll admit that they can be beautiful, in their own inscrutable (if ominous) way. For better or worse (and, yes, I have lived with several of them over the years), I always assume that they’re merely biding their time……before blithely surrendering themselves to some destructive, but deeply fulfilling (if one happens to be a cat) impulse. Bemusedly torturing a small animal or a nest of fledglings…..smothering sleeping infants or frail, elderly ladies in their beds (cats have been known to climb up on the pillow and lie down on the faces of their helpless victims)……and the list of grisly, truly-evil horrors goes on. “What’s fun for the cats is DEATH to the little ones of this earth”—-and truer words were never spoken.
Even at cats’ most benign?…the entire re-upholstery industry would probably collapse if it weren’t for cats and their wanton destruction.
I could go on, but it would, I’ve learned, be a waste of effort. Cats (And their besotted fanciers) were here before I ever came, and they will still be here, prospering, when I and my little dogs are all dead, buried, and thoroughly gone.
