I just finished reading “The Greek House: The Story of a Painter’s Love Affair With the Island of Sifnos”, by Christian Brechneff . It’s quite wonderful….and a far-far cry from the self-indulgent (and inevitably self-congratulatory) memoirs of American ex-pats who buy a house elsewhere. Unexpectedly enough, I’ve become friends with him on Facebook (See the first comment for a photograph of his undeniably handsome self, from forty years ago……aryan dreamboat material, indeed). That aside, the memoir is sharp, quite self-aware, sincerely (obviously) written, and just h.o.n.e.s.t.

As for “Santolina”?……that’s the name of the very useful plant/herb, rather than any particular place or island.
Still?….reading Christian’s memoir made me recall all of those times Herve and I spent on the Mediterranean. So, i went back today and finished up something I’d started a couple of years ago.
