This is the view from Ethel’s terrace in Sauve (A very small, medieval village off the beaten track in Southern France). Years ago, a number of successful/well-known-but-dissatisfied artists left NYC and settled in unknown (back then) Sauve. Robert Crumb (google him; you know his work, although you might not recognize the name) is Ethel’s next-door neighbor in the village. The New York Times occasionally runs articles about the artist expats….as though they were a bunch of old hippies (they’re not), and the village were a sort of commune (which it definitely isn’t). It’s just a small place where, years ago, a small group of folks found the space to work and be happy.
Ethel’s husband died a few years ago. You can find a wonderful memorial page at: https://hultberg.com/paul-hultberg-memorial/
It sometimes occurs to me, when I read Ethel’s regular postings on Facebook (you can “Friend” her at Ethel Sky-Hultberg) that I, having (I think) enough money, should just go there……see what I could do to help the older folks, do my own work…..and learn a lot. I’m too young to be feeling this old, and I expect that Ethel & her friends could teach me a lot.
And not to hammer down too hard, but?….Ethel’s got to be in her late 80′ s or 90’s…….and she still keeps happily working each day.Go to her facebook page. I am, obviously, a big fan-boy of hers, and it was kind of her to give me permission to paint the photograph she took from her back porch.
