I quite happily and productively lived, for seven years (circa 1996-2004), with the writer, Laura Argiri, in the old house she’d inherited from her grandmother.
I distinctly recall the evening when I returned (After a day of successfully hawking my tawdry wares at Durham’s “Arts Centerfest”) with a fanny-pack full of cash….a bit over $1,000….and all of it from pictures that fit into 9″x12″ frames. My slogan, then as now, was “Good Art: Done Right & Sold at Affordable Prices!” (predictably enough, my gallery owners hated this).
Laura, always gracious, congratulated me on my haul…..and then wistfully added “I wish I could cut out single paragraphs or passages from what I write and sell those.”
It’s true. You can’t sell the two or three good paragraphs from an otherwise sub-standard piece of fiction.
One can, however, cut-out and sell the good portion of an otherwise screwed-up painting of a horse.
