One of the delights of that first, long, 2004 trip through France (Starting in Grenoble, winding down into Provence, over to Perigord, and driving back up through central France) were all the wheat fields…which were inevitably bordered by poppies at time of the year.
Up to that time, I’d never been outside of East Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Ireland, or Oxford (all lovely places, of course, but none of them are known for broad horizons and wheatfields. To this day, I’ve never crossed the Mississippi river).
The trip was all quite beautiful (in addition to being the first time we’d ever been able to spend more than eight hours alone together). I still think of that trip often and fondly. What wasn’t perfect?……first love, first trip across France, first joint-account platinum American Express card?
I should perhaps emphasize that I never actually USED the Amex card until 9 years later, when Herve was abroad, and I emptied out my bank-account, paying for his car repairs. We had a ridiculous, Berlin-to-Durham telephone-call, during which he exasperatedly told me “That’s what the card is FOR, Silly…”. For better or worse (better, I think), I’d been raised to view using-a-credit-card as one would view opting for a tracheotomy or intubation……..to be avoided at ALL costs.
In that respect, I haven’t changed much. In any case, the card and Herve are both expired now. Odd, but unavoidably true.
