“The End of the Day”

I know, I know…..this would, no doubt, sell more quickly if I titled it “La Fin de l’Après-Midi”, but even I’m allergic to pretensions that are THAT transparent.
Why give a painting a “French” title when there are perfectly adequate & utterly translatable words in English?
When Herve had first come to Durham (circa 2000), he and I had fun (too much to be polite, I suppose) going to exhibits by an artist who, at the time, had a great following among the Triangle “Art world” cognoscenti. Her paintings had titles such as “Rouge/Red” and “Yellow/Jaune” (And when she ran out of crayola titles, she moved on to titles such as “Rouge/Red #3).
There are few things in this life more purely exasperating than standing in front of an artist who OBVIOUSLY EXPECTS you to gush……when all you can think is “I call bullshit on this”.
So, “End of the Afternoon” is just my little contribution to the The Federal Defense Against Homeland Pretentiousness.
