"In the Fields of Gold" (for Mary Terry)

11"x13"

oil pencil, watercolor, & pastel

2014

I began this for my much-admired sister-in-law on the day when my younger brother (whom I'll always regard as being about 7 years old) underwent some alarmingly serious heart surgery this past month. I had to do something..... I stayed in North Carolina, and they're in Tennessee, and there's little I could have done but help to over-crowd a hospital room. He's fine now, by the way....but it was more than a bit touch&go for a few days there.

In any case, I rarely (if ever) paint/draw anything without a very specific someone in mind......and this one is for Mary (whom I like a great deal, and have done so for many years).....hers is one of the two or three marriages (amongst the many I've witnessed) that I truly admire and wonder at.

"Fields Of Gold"

You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we walk in the fields of gold

So she took her love
For to gaze awhile
Upon the fields of barley
In his arms she fell as her hair came down
Among the fields of gold

Will you stay with me, will you be my love
Among the fields of barley?
We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky
As we lie in the fields of gold...

See the west wind move, like a lover so
Upon the fields of barley
Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth
Among the fields of gold
I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in the fields of gold
We'll walk in the fields of gold

Many years have passed since those summer days
Among the fields of barley
See the children run as the sun goes down
Among the fields of gold
You'll remember me when the west wind moves
Upon the fields of barley
You can tell the sun in his jealous sky
When we walked in fields of gold
