"A Watch For Me He'll Keep"

10"x12"

oil pencil, watercolor, & pastel

2013

This is a very small picture I finished a few days ago......another "version" (from another view) of the same landscape I did last Summer. As with the first picture, this one depicts several seasons at once....fully-leaved trees, a heavy frost, Summer morning-fog from the river, etcetera. Anyone with a lick of country-sense can also tell, by the sky, that it's both dawn and the end of the day.

Several of my very good friends are going through some scary & unanticipatedly hard times right now (second biopsies, job-insecurities, divorce, etcetera).  So, I did this for three of them after a couple of long-long conversations two weeks ago.  They're all on this list, and they'll know who they are. As I wrote previously, I rarely (if ever) do a painting without some specific someone in mind....

The title comes from Kate Rusby's very lovely (if not entirely-originally named, for anyone who recalls Cat Stevens) song " Moon Shadow"

If the clouds would only clear,
It won't be long 'til he'll be standing here.
If the winds will cease to blow,
Then he'll stay with me anywhere I go,
If these winds would cease to blow.

Moon shadow,
He's there but barely visible,
Moon shadow,
When I'm scared and fairly miserable,
A watch for me he'll keep,
So I might fall asleep.

He's the only friend I need,
He'll always follow when I take the lead,
Beside me now he'll lay,
I can close my eyes and I know he'll stay.

Around me things may creep,
But he'll keep me safe and he'll let me sleep,
He'll watch all through the night,
Then he'll creep away with the morning light,
But only when it's light.

Moon shadow,
He's there but barely visible,
Moon shadow,
When I'm scared and fairly miserable,
A watch for me he'll keep,
So I might fall asleep.
